LAWRENCE — Young, fired up Republicans didn’t pull off a March surprise Saturday in the university town serving as safe harbor for Democrats in a very, very red state.
Libertarian-minded fans of U.S. Rep. Ron Paul had expressed optimism voters taking part in Douglas County’s caucus at Free State High School near the University of Kansas campus would flock to the Texan.
“He’s the only honest candidate in the race,” said David Conway, a 25-year-old KU student and U.S. Army veteran injured by an IED during his second tour in Iraq. “You know what you’re getting.”
