Search And Rescue Event Coming to Salina

Search and rescue professionals from across the state will meet in Salina for a large training event.

According to the Kansas Adjutant General’s Office, the 6th annual Kansas Technical Rescue Conference begins on Tuesday. It is sponsored by the Kansas Search and Rescue Working Group, Kansas Division of Emergency Management, Adjutant General’s Department, Great Plains Joint Training Center, Crisis City and Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute.

This conference provides an opportunity for all seven regions within Kansas to collectively train to the same standards.

The three-day conference will be conducted at Crisis City, a state-of-the-art first responder, military, and private industry training center located approximately 10 miles southwest of Salina. Classes will include Technical Rope Rescue, Breach and Break, Shoring Operations, Cut/Burn and Lift/Move, Technical Search and K-9 Search and Rescue.

Crisis City is a multidiscipline training facility near Salina operated by the Kansas Division of Emergency Management. The facility’s training areas are designed to give law enforcement, fire departments, emergency medical personnel, military and other first responders practical, hands-on training tailored to their professional needs. Crisis City training venues include a simulated rail disaster, collapsed building, high angle rescue tower, pipeline isolation and repair, active shooter building, K-9 agility course, urban village and the Crisis City operations building, which includes classroom space and an observation deck that gives trainers and evaluators an overview of all the training areas.

A vendor appreciation night will be Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 6:30 p.m. in Building 365 at the Kansas Regional Training Institute, 2930 Scanlan Ave., Salina. The evening will include a presentation of the second annual William C. Brubaker Memorial Award.  The William C. Brubaker Memorial Award is given annually in memory of Bill Brubaker, who passed away unexpectedly while deployed to Elwood, Kansas during the Missouri River Floods of 2011. is intended to recognize an individual, team, or organization whose efforts exemplify the passion and dedication that Bill demonstrated for search & rescue in Kansas.
