Workshop on starting a food-based business Feb. 29 in Horton

Have you always wanted to start your own food business but didn’t know where to start? Glacial Hills Food Center is organizing a free “Starting a Food Business Workshop” from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29, at the Horton Community Center, 716 1st Avenue West, Horton.

Starting a Food Business WorkshopTopics and speakers include:

  • Simply Kansas Program and Other Marketing Ideas, presented by Becky Sullivan, Kansas Department of Agriculture;
  • Food Ingredient, Processing, Labeling, and Packaging Resources, presented by Dr. Fadi Aramouni, Kansas State University Value Added Foods Lab, and Kathryn Deschenes, Foods Lab manager;
  • Food Safety and Good Manufacturing Practices, Dr. Fadi Aramouni;
  • Insurance Needs of a Food Business, Paul McLenon, Shelter Insurance, and
  • Assistance Available for Starting a Business, Mary Ann Riederer, Washburn Small Business Development Center.

The workshop is sponsored by Glacial Hills Food Center, Kansas Value Added Foods Lab at K-State, Kansas Department of Agriculture, Washburn Small Business Development Center, and Northeast Kansas Rural Business Development Program.

The Glacial Hills Food Center, which is a program of the Glacial Hills RC&D, is a shared-use, commercial kitchen for food entrepreneurs who want to start or expand a food-based business.

The food center provides a commercially licensed kitchen and an assortment of shared commercial equipment which allow for food preparation, packaging and distribution of finished products in a food safe environment. The Food Center is the only kitchen incubator in northeast Kansas that supports food entrepreneurs in the production of fresh and preserved high value specialty foods.
