MD 0124 CONCERNING FREEZING RAIN FOR PORTIONS OF NORTHERN TEXAS

MD 0124 Image

Mesoscale Discussion 0124
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0350 PM CST Wed Feb 01 2023

Areas affected...Portions of northern Texas

Concerning...Freezing rain

Valid 012150Z - 020045Z

SUMMARY...Light to occasionally moderate freezing rain expected to
continue into the evening across portions of northern Texas.

DISCUSSION...A broad stratiform precipitation shield continues to
spread into northern Texas. Surface temperatures remain in the mid
to upper 20s which is leading to ice accretion. Most notably,
Abilene and Mineral Wells received 0.05" ice accretion between
20-21Z according to ASOS observations. Expect similar accretion
rates across northern Texas into the evening. The HRRR continues to
show heavier precipitation and more banded structures through the
Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex this evening which may lead to more
significant icing. However, current radar trends would suggest the
maximum may be north and west of the Metroplex. Nonetheless,
impactful icing is expected across much of northern Texas for the
remainder of the afternoon and into the evening.
