Chain saw artist John Zibell, Holton, put the finishing touches on a cross he created in the Valley Falls Cemetery one day last week.

The cross was cut from a tree trunk that stands about 15 feet high. The top was removed during the summer and the trunk left for this purpose, according to Jim Braum, local funeral director.
Zibell returned Friday to apply a coat of varnish. He does not expect the cross to stand many years.
He said the trunk is not very solid and he intends to use some brackets to help hold the cross.
“It should stand for a few years,” he said.
Zibell is a carpenter by trade doing mostly remodels and building additions to homes. He is a Holton native and father of three children with five grandchildren.
He took up chain saw art for fun and has been featured in the Holton and Topeka papers for carving eagles and bears. He has entered the competition on the national stage at Eau Claire, Wisc.
