MD 0587 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 156… FOR MIDDLE AND UPPER TEXAS COAST INTO SOUTHEAST LA

Mesoscale Discussion 0587
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0130 AM CDT Fri Apr 21 2023

Areas affected...Middle and Upper Texas Coast into southeast LA

Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 156...

Valid 210630Z - 210800Z

The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 156
continues.

SUMMARY...Damaging gusts and large-hail potential will persist
across portions of the Middle and Upper Texas coasts into southeast
Louisiana into early morning.

DISCUSSION...A cluster of storms approaching the edge of the Edwards
Plateau will continue to shift east/southeast across the Middle TX
coastal Plain the next few hours. A new severe thunderstorm watch
will likely be needed for portions of this area as the current watch
is set to expire at 07z. The airmass downstream of ongoing
convection remains very moist and unstable with little inhibition
noted in objective analysis and RAP forecast soundings. Moderate
instability, steep midlevel lapse rates and curved hodographs,
becoming elongated above 3 km, will continue to support strong to
severe thunderstorms capable of large hail and locally damaging
gusts.

Further north along the TX coast, a cluster of storms approaching
the Sabine River and eventually southeast LA will continue to pose a
damaging wind threat in the short term. Inhibition increases with
eastward extent, and convection should eventually weak and/or become
elevated above the stable near-surface boundary-layer. A local
extension in time/area may be needed to address this short-term
threat.
