It’s a heroic act that saved the lives of a Johnson County family and the person responsible says he isn’t a hero for saving a family from a burning home.
Seven-year-old Daryn Duncan was next door to the home at west 49th and Nieman around 11:45 Saturday night, when he saw the fire. Duncan ran back into the home and told the people inside.
They then called 911 and then ran over and knocked on the door to wake up the family sleeping inside. He says he did what anyone else would have done in his situation.
“I just felt like, ‘Oh no. What’s going to happen? I just gotta tell somebody,’” says Duncan.
A person who lived inside the home tried to put the fire out and suffered minor burns. Investigators said an improperly installed wood-burning stove caused the fire. Damage was estimated at $1,500.
