A car went out of control and crashed into a house in southeast Wichita early Friday, injuring one person and leaving the house with substantial damage.

Police say a driver who may have been speeding went out of control on Mount Vernon around 1:30 a.m.  He skidded for several hundred feet and hit a house at the South Santa Fe intersection, knocking over the traffic sign.

The driver of the car and the person inside the house were not hurt.  But police say one person who had minor injuries disappeared after the crash.  It’s not clear if he was in the car or was a bystander.

Part of the home’s foundation was removed by the force of the crash, leaving part of the basement open.  The family living there went somewhere else for the remainder of the night.

For a time, there was concern the house or car might become filled with smoke.  “Typically when you have an accident like this, you have damage to lines in the vehicle,” said police Lt. James Espinoza.  Firefighters quickly arrived to ensure no fire broke out.
