Three adults and one baby thankfully escaped a fire in their Kansas City, Kan. duplex Wednesday morning.
The fire started at about 7:15 a.m. near 10th and Miami Ave.
“That’s all that matters. I got the baby out,” said Kelly Dickerson, one of the residents. “I felt the heat at the bottom of my feet. I had to jump over the flames to get through the front room to get the baby out.”
Although the duplex had smoke detectors, they were not working.
The cause is under investigation, but firefighters believe it started in or near a closet.
The Red Cross was on the scene to help the family. There is an estimated $30,000 in damages.
