Fire destroyed an Elk City home before 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation at the scene Wednesday but Elk City and Louisburg Township Fire Chief Eric Bennett said the house, owned by Joe Council, was a total loss.

Firefighters with Independence Rural Fire District No. 1 also helped extinguish the fire at 204 E. Hickory in Elk City. The front of the house received the most damage, and Bennett said a propane tank on the front porch began venting pressure during the fire, and the fuel ignited.

Council was the only occupant and was not home at the time of the fire. There were no injuries in the incident.
