Topeka firefighters rescued three people early Monday from a fire at a central Topeka home.
Fire crews were called about 1:10 a.m. to a report of a fire at 1515 S.W. Tyler.
In a news release, fire officials said residents on the second floor of the house awoke to heavy smoke coming from the lower floors. The three occupants were trapped because of heavy smoke and called 911, officials said.
When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke in the home’s first floor, and they immediately began rescue operations. Three occupants — identified only as a 27-year-old woman, a 26-year-old man, and a 60-year-old man — were rescued from the second floor by fire crews.
A fourth occupant of the home was able to escape the home before the fire department arrived, officials said.
Fire crews located the fire in the home’s basement and quickly extinguished it. The house sustained light fire damage, as well as smoke damage throughout the building.
The home’s occupants were checked by American Medical Response ambulance personnel at the scene.
A fire investigator determined the fire was caused by careless smoking and started in a couch in the basement.
Damage to the home was estimated at $10,500.
