KAKE – December 20, 2013
Several crews were called to a home in Oaklawn during the midnight hour Thursday. And a crowded house may have complicated the effort to bring the fire under control.
The fire started shortly before 12:30 a.m. in the 4900 block of South Brookhaven. Crews found the worst flames in the back of the home, and put them out in only a few minutes. But finding the fire source wasn’t easy.
“They had a difficult time accessing the structure itself due to ‘extreme storage,’ we’ll refer to it as, in the structure itself and the backyard,” said Battalion Chief Stewart Seagraves with Sedgwick County Fire District 1.
All the items in the house is making it difficult to pin down how the fire started. The damage from the fire is estimated in the range of $40,000.
Only one person was inside the home when the fire broke out. That person got out safely.
