Eight residents needed temporary shelter Sunday night after their apartment complex at 1227 Vattier St. caught fire from arcing electrical meters.
Firefighters from the Manhattan Fire Department responded at 9:37 p.m. to the three-story apartment building, owned by Robert Huber of Manhattan, where they found the meters arcing. Crews stood by until the meters were de-energized by Westar Energy and then extinguished the fire. Crews left the scene around 1 a.m.
The eight occupants who were displaced from the residence were assisted by the American Red Cross and Kansas State University Student Life. No one was injured.
The total estimated loss was $5,000 to the complex’s contents and $10,000 to the structure. Assistant Fire Chief Sam Dameron said the complex had six units, two of which were damaged. He said one had fire damage and the other had water damage.
