Fire Does Heavy Damage To Holton Home

Fire has forced a Holton family out of their home.

Crews were called around 1 pm Thursday to a fire at 708 New York St. in Holton.

Fire Chief Kevin Ingels told 13 News the fire started in the basement around the furnace area. He said it appears the fire was burning for quite some time before it was noticed. By the time crews arrived, he said, they couldn’t use the front door because the fire had burned through the floor into the living room and up the walls to the second story.

Ingels says firefighters accessed the home from the rear and knocked down the blaze, but the home suffered heavy damage inside and was rendered unlivable.

Crews remained on the scene Thursday afternoon monitoring hot spots.

Ingels said cold temperatures created a few challenges. He said equipment was freezing up and water that drained onto the sidewalks and streets created icy conditions. In addition, he said firefighters tired more quickly working in cold conditions.

No one was home at the time of the fire and no one was injured.
