Fire forces 4 people out of Shawnee home

KMBC – December 9, 2013

Fire forced four people out of a Shawnee home early Sunday.

Investigators said the fire started in a lower-level fireplace in the home in the 11900 block of West 66th Street. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters said the house did not have any working smoke detectors.

“Had the resident not been awake and noticed the smoke, this fire could have had a catastrophic ending with no working smoke alarms to awake the two adults and two sleeping children,” said Shawnee Fire Marshal Corey Sands.

The Red Cross was helping the four people with new supplies and a new place to stay.

Investigators said that damage from the fire is estimated at $130,000.
