Fire out before help arrives

The Oberlin Fire Department got a call reporting a fire in a home on Penn Avenue on Thursday, but it had been put out before firefighters arrived.

Chief Bill Cathcart said the fire was reported in the 600 block of Penn Ave., at the home of Oberlin police officer Brad Messersmith and his family. Although the fire was already extinguished, he said, firefighters had to remove smoke from the house.

“The fire department determined” he said, “that a hole in the clothes dryer vent hose, which was in operation at the time, heated and ignited a fishing tackle box that was on the floor next to the dryer.”

Mr. Cathcart said the tackle box was destroyed and there was light smoke damage to the utility room. Mr. Messersmith, his wife and two children were home at the time, but no one was hurt.
