A trash fire spread and ignited hay and a storage west of Clay Center yesterday
Clay Center Rural (Hayes) and Clay Center city fire departments responded just before 4 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a carport fire at 1158 18th Road, on US-24 just east of the Republican River Bridge.
Firefighters saved the storage shed, but all contents in the shed belonging to Earl J. Johnson were lost, Clay Center Rural Fire Chief Robert Johnson said.
“Evidently an outside trash receptacle ignited, caught some grass on fire, spread into a car garage/storage shed and burned a bunch of hay bales,” Chief Johnson said.
Besides hay bales, miscellaneous items inside the shed were lost.
