The fire trucks had just arrived at the parking lot of the Hill City Livestock Sales, LLC at the south edge of Hill City when the above picture was taken at about 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 30. A pickup truck pulling a trailer carrying about five large, round bales had entered Hill City from the north on U.S. 283 when the driver noticed that some of the bales were on fire. Burning materials were dropped from the load on the highway as the driver drove to the parking lot where the fire could be extinguished by local firefighters.
One burning bale still remained on the bale trailer being towed by a pickup truck after the driver had managed to unload four other burning bales upon his arrival in the parking lot at the Hill City Livestock Market, LLC at the south edge of Hill City an hour before noon on Saturday, November 30. Local firefighters arrived on the scene shortly after the above picture was taken and were on the scene for approximately three hours, extinguishing the fires. Burning materials from the trailer were dropped along U.S. Highway 283 from the north edge of town requiring local law enforcement officials to extinguish them with hand held fire extinguishers.
