PERRY — Don Hurd hasn’t seen drought conditions this bad since 1956, when he was 10 years old.
The lack of rain and high temperatures have left his crops dry. From the road overlooking part of his “hill farming” acreage in the Kaw Valley farmland area north of Perry, he can see patches of brown where his corn is dying.
“This corn will just give up and fall over,” Hurd said Friday while driving around to check his crops. “The stalks will rot, and the roots will die.”
