Kansas City, Kan., firefighters battled five fires overnight and this morning, according to a Fire Department spokesman.
In subzero wind chills, firefighters were called to five fires in the city.
Apartment building fire on 18th Street
A 21-unit apartment building fire at 1215 N. 18th St. at 7:08 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, displaced about 36 residents, according to the spokesman. No injuries were reported.
The spokesman said there was extensive damage to the southwest corner of the structure, with extensive smoke and water damage.
When crews arrived, they found smoke in the first floor and basement area. The fire appeared to have originated in the southwest apartment on the first floor, the spokesman said.
Because of the type of construction, the fire spread to the second floor and third floor, eventually entering the attic area, the spokesman said. A ventilation hole also was cut into the roof. A second alarm was called for additional firefighters.
The fire is under investigation, the spokesman said. The Red Cross was called to assist 36 residents.
Four-unit apartment building at 5th and Tenny
Crews arrived at 540 Tenny after a fire was reported at 5:34 a.m. Dec. 7 at a four-unit apartment building.
Flames and black smoke were reported coming from the upstairs apartment on the west side, the Fire Department spokesman said.
Firefighters quickly advanced hose lines down the central hall to the room where the fire was found. Simultaneously, the entire apartment was being searched for residents, the spokesman said.
The fire extended into the walls and attic area. Crews were on the scene for two and a half hours.
No injuries were reported, but one resident was treated on the scene for difficulty breathing, according to the spokesman.
The Red Cross was called to assist four adults.
The dollar loss was not determined at this time, but there was extensive water damage and damage to the structure, the spokesman said.
Fire starts in fireplace of home at 24th and Stewart
A fire reported at 8:32 p.m. Dec. 6 started in the fireplace of an unoccupied home, according to the Fire Department spokesman.
The house was being remodeled at the time, and the fire in the fireplace had been left unattended, the spokesman said.
When crews arrived, the fire was coming from around the chimney and roof, he said. The fire was brought under control in 20 minutes. There were no injuries to firefighters.
The damage was estimated at $4,000 to the $30,000 home.
Vacant home on South 13th totally destroyed by fire
A vacant home at 2447 S. 13th was totally destroyed by a fire at 3:11 a.m. Dec. 7.
According to the Fire Department spokesman, when fire crews arrived, the fire was fully involved.
The fire had vented through the roof before the Fire Department’s arrival, the spokesman said.
The incident commander ordered a defensive attack because the integrity of the house had been compromised, according to the spokesman. Crews were on scene for approximately two hours. There were no injuries to firefighters.
The damage to the home, a total loss, was estimated at $30,000, according to the Fire Department.
Home on Maggie Lane a total loss
A home at 4550 Maggie Lane was a total loss in a fire at 12:48 a.m. Dec. 7.
According to the Fire Department spokesman, crews arrived to find fire and smoke coming from the windows and doors.
Firefighters entered the home and conducted a search for the occupants, but did not find anyone, the spokesman said.
The fire was knocked down 20 minutes after crews arrived, and the fire was out by 1:26 a.m.
There were no injuries to residents or firefighters. The fire is under investigation, the spokesman said.
The estimated dollar loss was $35,000, according to the Fire Department.
