A man in his mid-60s died Tuesday after his truck smashed into a semi parked at the Matfield Green Service Area along the Kansas Turnpike, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
Master Trooper Chris Markham said the man was driving a Chevy S-14 at “near highway speeds” when he pulled into the entrance of the northbound service area and apparently struck a sign before rear-ending the big rig around 9 p.m.The man reportedly died at the scene. His name was not released Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning. Markhum would not say where the man was from.Investigators think impairment or a medical condition may be to blame, Markhum said. He was the only person in the Chevy at the time.The driver of the semi – a man in his 50s – was asleep inside of the parked vehicle when the collision occurred, Markham said. He was not hurt but reportedly awoke on impact.
According to the Kansas Turnpike’s Twitter feed, several emergency vehicles responded to the service area Tuesday after the crash. Drivers were asked to use caution.
The Matfield Green Service Area is located about 20 miles north of El Dorado. The speed limit on the highway in that area is 75 mph.
