A family that nearly lost pets in a porch fire in Green Tuesday morning is thankful that it wasn’t worse.
Nancy Kimbrough, who owns and operates Maury’s Family Restaurant in Clay Center, reported on Facebook her back porch “pretty much totaled and there was smoke damage throughout the entire house.” She and her husband live there.
The Kimbroughs’ dog and three cats “were trapped inside but were rescued by some very brave men,” Nancy said. The animals were all treated for smoke inhalation and a couple of pets required follow-up treatment, including a 17-year-old cat named Joy who spent the night at the veterinarian.
The back porch was used as a storage area because it is an enclosed area. Due to remodeling, they kept clothes there too. Nancy said she and her husband lost most of their clothes, their washer and dryer, small appliances such as a vacuum cleaner, a metal detector, and some electronics and automotive items, and a computer.
“But all can be replaced,” Nancy said. “it’s the priceless items that survived–such as my mom’s feather hat and my dad’s Sea Bee flag! Amazing.
The Green Rural Fire Department responded to the fire late Tuesday morning at 1001 Dixon Ave., Green, and was assisted by other agencies.
“We are so very appreciative for all the volunteer firemen that responded and saved the rest of our house,” Kimbrough posted. “And to our neighbors, Jim and Judy Lippert for calling 911 and to everyone that helped save our animals. This could have been so much worse. Thank you God for your protection!”
Nancy also said they appreciate everyone who has helped and been patient with them. Maury’s closed early Wednesday and today to help our the Kimbroughs.
