A record 1,300 volunteers fanned out across the city on Friday, rolling up their sleeves for the fifth annual Nancy Perry Day of Caring sponsored by the United Way of Greater Topeka.
The event, which is the official kickoff for the annual Live United campaign, started with a breakfast for about 500 volunteers at the Agricultural Hall at the Kansas Expocentre, S.W. 17th and Tyler.
From there, the volunteers engaged in approximately 80 hands-on projects across the city. Some 40 companies were represented at the event.
