The Shawnee Fire Department recently honored the winners of its fire-safety poster contest for all Shawnee elementary schools.
The 2013 City of Shawnee Fire Safety Poster Contest ran in partnership with the Office of the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Fire Safety Poster Contest. Shawnee firefighters judged the posters from two age groups: kindergarten through third grade, and fourth through sixth grade. The Shawnee battalion chiefs judged the finalists, then passed them along to Chief John Mattox, who selected the winners.
Fourth-grader MacKenzie Riggs and second-grader Stevan Baker, both from Broken Arrow Elementary, won their categories. Their winning posters will represent Shawnee in the statewide contest, where they’ll be displayed in the state capitol rotunda in Topeka during the month of January.
“I am very proud of all of the students and schools that submitted fire safety posters,” Mattox said at a recent banquet for the winners, “and I wish MacKenzie and Steven the best of luck in the statewide fire safety poster contest.”
