Police say men on motorcycles were speeding just before they slammed into the back of a truck yesterday in southeast Wichita.

One man was killed, and another man and teenage girl were hurt in the crash just before 5 p.m. Monday on Pawnee near Webb Road.

On Tuesday, police released more information.

Two motorcycles were westbound on Pawnee and stopped at the light at Webb. Police said there was some kind of gesture exchanged between the two riders, then both took off speeding from the intersection in the same lane.

The motorcycles were traveling at a high rate of speed, and came up on a utility truck in the same westbound lane of Pawnee. They tried to maneuver around the truck, but were unsuccessful and both crashed.

A 25-year-old man and his 13-year-old sister were on one of the motorcycles, and both suffered serious injuries.

The other rider was killed in the crash. He’s been identified as 28-year-old Jeremy D. Emerson of Wichita.

Police said speed was a factor and there are indications the men were racing, which was corroborated by some witnesses. Officers don’t believe the riders knew each other.

Pawnee was closed in both directions from Webb to Capri for some time yesterday evening while crews investigated the accident.

This is the 30th traffic fatality of the year in Wichita, and the 6th involving a motorcycle.
