Wichita South High School students in the Fire Science Program completed their midterm exams today. Part of the exam included a simulation of a building collapse.
“I think any kind of hands on learning definitely helps these kids out,” said Kyle Haught, teacher of the Fire Science Program.
The 25 students wore full gear, complete with oxygen tanks and masks, and simulated a “Mayday” drill.
Each student wore a blacked out mask to simulate a building filled with smoke, then they experienced a building collapse, and finally escaped through a drywall.
“It was almost like the real thing,” said Braden Stoner, senior. “Not a lot of schools can have this opportunity.”
The three-year-old program works in partnership with Hutchinson Community College and Sedgwick County Fire Department. Students who complete the courses can earn 5.5 hours of college credit at HCC.
