A man burning leaves and brush Sunday afternoon, west of New Strawn, accidentally caught a trailer on fire. The single wide trailer, which was being used for storage and was not occupied, was completely destroyed.

William Fouser, who is renting another trailer on the property at 1150 16th Road, had been burning near the trailer that stored some of his property and property from the Maria Isabel Lang estate. Fouser had obtained a burn permit and had called dispatch earlier, letting them know he was starting the burn.

The property is owned by the Maria Isabel Lang Trust; Fouser was carrying renter’s insurance.

Fouser called Coffey County Sheriff’s Dispatch and reported the fire at 3:27 p.m. Sunday, December 1. New Strawn firefighters were first on the scene and found the trailer engulfed in flames. Burlington firefighters also responded.

According to Coffey County Fire Chief Randall Brown, 14 firefighters fought the blaze defensively for two hours, using two pumpers, two tankers and three brush trucks. Also responding were emergency personnel and law enforcement.

Chief Brown estimated loss of the trailer and contents at $5,000. Fouser was housing a lawn mower and tools at one end of the trailer. The other contents, such as furniture, bedding and clothing, belonged to the Lang estate.
