An old house in Wayside was destroyed by fire late Tuesday afternoon.
The structure, located at 319 E. Bell, Wayside, was fully engulfed in flames by the time volunteer firefighters from Havana and Tyro were dispatched and arrived, according to Phil Clubine, the chief of the Havana division of Montgomery County Rural Fire District No. 1.
“It was fully engulfed when we got there. There wasn’t a lot we could do,” Clubine said.
He said the structure had an electric meter attached and power was running to the top of the meter, but the house did not have electricity to it at the time of the fire.
“I guess you could call it a suspicious fire,” Clubine said.
Clubine said the occupant, whose last name is Gomez, had moved into the house on Monday.
“It went up quick, Clubine said. “It’s the kind of house I refer to as a kindle box. It’s old and it burned fast.”
