Commission wants better rural Internet service

By Jared Speckman

The county commission, along with several members of the community, had a lengthy discussion with representatives from Century Link to discuss Internet opportunities in Jefferson County.

Commissioners and citizens expressed their frustrations to the two representatives over the lack of coverage in the area.

Commissioner Wayne Ledbetter was among those adamant about getting Internet into the more rural areas of Jefferson County.

“Two-thirds of our population is rural,” he said. “The vast majority of those people have no access.”

“I’m not going to deny that we don’t have pockets (of no access),” said Century Link representative John Idoux. “Broadband is something that’s influenced by distance.”
