A four-vehicle fatality crash Tuesday evening in Johnson County shut down K-10 highway in both directions for several hours, authorities said.

The cross-over crash was reported at 4:50 p.m. on K-10 highway near Renner Road in Lenexa.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the accident occurred when a 2006 Ford van side-swiped a 1983 Dodge pickup truck as both were traveling east on K-10.

The pickup truck then spun out of control and crossed the median, entering westbound traffic.

The 1983 Dodge pickup truck was then struck in the driver’s door by a westbound 2010 Dodge pickup truck. The 2010 Dodge pickup was then struck on its passenger side by a westbound 2001 Lexus.

The patrol said the driver of the 1983 pickup truck, Randy R. Schimmel, 52, of Lawrence, was taken to Overland Park Regional Medical Center, where he died. The patrol said Schimmel wasn’t wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the 2006 Ford van, Cody D. Conley, 27, of Raytown, Mo., was reported uninjured in the accident. The patrol said Conley wasn’t wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the 2010 Dodge pickup truck, Jeffrey P. Placek, 42, of Lenexa, was reported uninjured. He was wearing a seat belt, the patrol said.

The driver of the Lexus, Cynthia S. Green, 55, of Shawnee, also was reported uninjured. She was wearing her seat belt, the patrol said.

Each of the drivers was traveling alone.

K-10 highway was closed until around 10 p.m. Tuesday as the patrol investigated and cleared the accident scene.
