Two large landscaping stones fell on the hood of a pickup truck during one of two minor injury accidents reported over a 32-minute period Friday evening.

The names of the people involved in the wrecks weren’t being released Saturday.

Shawnee County sheriff’s Lt. Danny Lotridge said in a news release that deputies were called about 7:40 p.m. Friday to the 3200 block of S.W. Carlson Road, where a dump truck loaded with two large landscaping stones had stalled in the road’s southbound lane and its battery had died, leaving the truck without lights.

Lotridge said a Chevy Silverado pickup truck that was southbound on Carlson struck the rear of the dump truck and the landscaping stones fell out of its bed, landing on the Silverado’s hood before coming to rest on the road.

The dump truck driver was taken by American Medical Response ambulance to a Topeka hospital with injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening. The driver of the Silverado suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene, Lotridge said. Both had been wearing seat belts.

Lotridge said the Dover Fire Department also responded to the scene and helped winch the landscaping stones out of the roadway.

Deputies previously had been called about 7:18 p.m. Friday to the scene of a one-vehicle crash on Interstate 70 near S.W. Auburn Road.

Lotridge said a Pontiac G6 had been eastbound on I-70 in the left, inside lane when the driver swerved to the right lane to avoid a tarp in the roadway and overcorrected, causing the car to slide sideways, strike the concrete barrier in the center median and come to rest in the ditch on the highway’s south side.

The driver, who had been wearing a seat belt, suffered injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening and was taken by AMR to a Topeka hospital, Lotridge said.

The Mission Fire Department also responded to the scene.
