Bleeding Kansas Series resumes in Lecommpton

Politicians, underground railroad, Quantrill’s raid survivors topics of Bleeding Kansas Series

The Kansas Historical Society has announced that Constitution Hall State Historic Site in Lecompton will once again present its Bleeding Kansas series.

These programs are at 2 p.m. Sundays from Jan. 29 to Feb. 26 and include presentations by Kansas history experts. Suggested donation $3 for adults. Constitution Hall State Historic Site is located at 319 Elmore.

The first one will be a special Kansas Day presentation, “The Underground Railroad on the Kansas Frontier” by Todd Mildfelt, educator and author.

The series continues Feb. 5 with “A Principled Politician: James H. Lane and the Fight for Kansas and the Union” by Ian Spurgeon, military historian, author, and native Kansan. The Feb. 12 program will be “Lawrence: Survivors of Quantrill’s Raid” by Katie Armitage, author and historian.

On Feb. 19, “Perry Fuller: The Road from Poverty to Riches, Influence and Political Power” will be presented by Deborah Barker, executive director, Franklin County Historical Society.

The series concludes Feb. 26 with “Teaching the Civil War in the 21st Century” by Paul Stuewe, educator, author, and executive committee board member, Kansas Historical Foundation. Mildfelt, Spurgeon, and Armitage will sign copies of their books following their presentations.
