A five-vehicle accident that caused Kansas Highway 27 between Greeley and Wallace counties to be closed for several hours Monday afternoon resulted in one possible injury. The accident occurred at about 11:50 a.m. on K27, about three miles north of Tribune. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2007 International truck, driven by Erick J. Garcia-Rodrigues, 32, Garden City, was backing up to turn around in a dirt storm when his vehicle was struck by a 2005 Kenworth truck, driven by Ronald Neil Howard, 77, Arapahoe, Colo. Robert Lee Smith, 60, Holyoke, Colo., who was driving a 2007 Freightliner truck, was able to stop and while backing away from the accident, was struck by a 2002 Kenworth truck that was being driven by Gary L. Hatcher, 78, Syracuse. Then Henry L. Dinkel, 61, Sharon Springs, who was driving a 1999 Kenworth truck, made an evasive turn and struck Howard’s truck. Howard was taken to the Greeley County Hospital for a possible injury. Hospital officials had no information regarding his condition. According to the KHP, all of the men were wearing seat belts. KDOT re-opened that stretch of K27 later in the afternoon. KDOT closed another stretch of K27 between Johnson City and Syracuse because of a separate multi-vehicle accident that occurred in the poor visibility conditions on Monday afternoon. A third multi-vehicle accident that occurred about seven miles south of Garden City resulted in the closing of U.S. Highway 83 from the U.S.-83/U.S.-83 Business junction south of Garden City to the junction of U.S. 83, U.S. 160 and K 144 in Haskell County. Additional details about those accidents were not available as of press time. KDOT re-opened the roads between 6 and 7 p.m.
