Coal train derails in Grantville

A Union Pacific train derailed Monday night in Grantville, sending a piece of flying debris through the window of a child’s bedroom, according to Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Herrig.

Sheriff’s deputies were alerted at 9:36 p.m. that a UP coal train had derailed in the town east of Topeka.

“We’re estimating there are 23 coal cars,” Herrig said. “One house was damaged by a piece of flying rail. It went through the window of a child’s bedroom, and it hit the bottom bed of a bunk bed. The child was on the top bunk, thankfully. No one was injured.”
