The Cunningham Volunteer Fire Department has made several trips out of town the past week. Wind and dry conditions contributed to all three fires.
On Wednesday, September 18, around 1:00 p.m., the volunteer firefighters responded to a fire at the city brush site southeast of town. The fire had reignited from coals left from a controlled burn at the pit the week before. A strong wind was blowing embers toward round bales of hay in the field adjacent to the burn site. Three trucks and seven firefighters responded and extinguished the fire.
Shortly before 11 a.m., Monday morning, September 23, Cunningham volunteers responded to a tire fire on a vehicle on US 54 highway east of town. The fire was extinguished while the fire trucks were enroute.
At 7:21 Monday evening, Cunningham Fire Department responded to a mutual aid request in Pratt County to a large fire involving hay bales, trees, and grass seven miles west, one mile north and ½ east of Cunningham. About 275 bales were lost in the fire. A dozen volunteers responded and three trucks, including the large tanker, were used. Later that evening, around 9:40, the firefighters were called to extinguish brush piles which had reignited east of 90th north of US 54 highway.
