Topeka Fire Department crews put out a small blaze Thursday morning at a one-story home on the city’s east side after extinguishing a fire at the same address overnight.

Crews were called at 7:45 a.m. to a residence at 1005 S.E. Lafayette on a report of a fire.

First-arriving firefighters reported seeing flames coming from the attic.

The fire was quickly brought under control, and crews ventilated smoke from the residence within about 10 minutes of their arrival.

Topeka Fire Department Shift Commander Mike Thompson said crews had been to the residence about 3 a.m. Thursday to put out a small fire in the attic area.

No injuries were reported in that fire, though the home’s occupants had to leave the residence.

Thompson said the fire at 7:45 a.m. occurred when one of the home’s occupants returned to the residence to retrieve some clothing.

When the man opened the door and allowed fresh air into the house, it caused the fire to flare up again.

The Kansas Capital Area  Chapter of the American Red Cross had been called to assist the home’s occupants.
