Baler catches fire in field

McPherson Sentinel – September 9, 2013

At 3:09 p.m. Thursday, firefighters from Inman and Windom responded to Third Avenue and Comanche Road for a report of a baler on fire.

While being used in the field, one of its bearings heated and caught fire.

A driver managed to get the baler out of the field. It was then doused with water and saved, but as it was pulled out, it ignited the vegetation underneath, resulting in a field fire.

Inman fire chief Dennis Schroeder estimated the blaze took between three and three and a half hours to extinguish.

The fire not only caused damage in the field, but it also burnt 200 bales of hay, worth an estimated $15,000.
