A fire that ignited from careless smoking resulted in $50,000 in structure damage at Century Plaza Apartments early Sunday morning, but no one was seriously injured.
Topeka Fire Department crews reported about 3:30 a.m. Sunday to an automatic fire alarm at 2200 S.E. 28th St., according to a news release from department investigator Michael Martin. Suppression crews saw heavy smoke and flames coming from Apartment 21.
The apartment’s occupant had left the building on his own, Martin said. Rescue crews performed emergency first aid, and he was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.
Suppression crews initiated an interior attack of the fire, quickly extinguishing the blaze, Martin said.
A fire investigation revealed the origin of the fire to be in a bedroom in the north end of Apartment 21. Martin said the fire is being classified as accidental and associated with careless smoking.
Three engines, two truck companies, two chief officers and one fire investigator responded to the scene, Martin said. Four separate residents were assisted in evacuation by rescue crews from adjacent apartments.
In addition to the $50,000 in structure damage, Martin said there was an additional estimated $30,000 in damage to the building’s content.
