Cause of garage fire that started in car being sought

Hutchinson News – September 17, 2013

The Hutchinson Fire Department is investigating the cause of a garage fire that started in a vehicle only a few minutes after it was turned off.

Hutchinson Fire Department Battalion Chief Doug Hanen said the fire, which occurred Thursday evening in the 400 block of Birch Way, likely started from electrical issues in the vehicle, an early 2000 Pontiac. He said the vehicle’s owner was driving the car and had just gotten home about 10 minutes before the fire started in its engine compartment. Hanen said the owner smelled smoke from the attached garage, gathered her children and left the home.

Firefighters contained the flame to the garage. While the garage received only smoke damage, Hanen said the car was destroyed.
