The Seventh Annual Harvey County United Way Chili Cookoff was held in Newton last Saturday, September 28.

The event was once again a success with some heated competition this year. Sheriff T. Walton vowed to be the “King of The Bean” this year but in the end his spicy competitive actions didn’t help. The Newton Fire/EMS and the Newton Police Department defeated the sheriff.

Winners of the open class division were the Newton Fire and EMS with members Battalion Chief Roger Perkin (who was said to have cooked the chili), Fire Chief Mark Willis, Deputy Chief Scott Metzler, Brett Butler and Drew Couey.

Yet photos by the sheriff seem to imply that the Newton firemen were eating his chili during the cookoff.

“We tried our best and didn’t use goat,” said Walton, jokingly referring to a goat that was running loose that week in Harvey County. “The winners were just lucky.”
