Columbus man dies in freak accident

A Columbus man is dead after an accident Tuesday evening.
According to Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves, at about 6 p.m. Tuesday the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a car vs. deer, non-injury accident, located approximately 2.5 miles east of Columbus on Highway 160.
The driver, Mona Nicoletti, 86 , of Columbus, was driving a 2010 Chevy Malibu, westbound, when the vehicle struck a deer. Louis Nicoletti, 90, of Columbus, was a passenger in the vehicle.
Neither were injured in that collision.
However, a short time later, as Mr. Nicoletti was crossing the highway, he was struck by an eastbound 2011 Chevy Malibu driven by 63 year old Rosemary Pillar, also of Columbus.
Nicoletti was transported by Cherokee County EMS to Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri, where he was later pronounced dead.
The collision is under investigation.
