Burden and Atlanta firefighters responded to a combine and soybean field fire Thursday afternoon at the intersection of 191st and 192nd roads.
Farmer Daryl Thiel of Winfield had made a pass or two cutting soybeans when he smelled smoke, said Dan McClaskey, Burden Fire Department captain of operations. Thiel looked in his rear view mirror and saw smoke. When he stopped the combine and looked at the rear, he saw the machine was on fire, McClaskey said. He reported the fire at 3:24 p.m. according to Burden FD records.
When Burden firefighters arrived at the scene, the back end of the combine was fully engulfed, McClaskey said, and with the wind, the fire had spread into the soybean stubble and into a neighboring pasture. Burden called the Atlanta Fire Department and had them bring their grass rig to handle the stubble and pasture fire while Burden took care of the combine, a 2012 John Deere.
It took between 15 and 20 minutes to get the fires under control, McClaskey said.
He did not have an estimate, he said Thursday evening, but “The damage was pretty extensive.”
