Early morning rollover caused by deer

A deer caused an early morning rollover Sunday.

Lyon County Deputies and the Lyon County/Emporia Fire Department responded to the accident, 6:09 a.m., at the intersection of Road 180 and Road R in Lyon County.

The accident involved a 2001 Ford pickup driven by Derek Barnhart, 18, with an occupant, Eric Kirby, 22, both of Emporia.

The truck was traveling southbound on Road R when a deer ran out in front of the vehicle. The truck swerved and rolled, before coming to a rest south of Road 180.

Kirby was extracted from the vehicle by fire department personnel and transported to Newman Regional Health by ambulance. Kirby’s condition is unknown at this time.

Barnhart was treated and released at the scene.

Neither of the occupants were wearing seat belts.
