Vickie Nabors noticed a large amount of smoke coming from her rural Assaria neighbor’s house Monday morning and after further investigation called 911 to report a fire.
She said the wood under the back door of Dan and Sandy Petitjean’s house on Tamara Lane had a scorched appearance.
“The garage door was up, which was strange, so I went and banged on the doors to make sure nobody was home,” she said.
David Hamilton, a Saline county sheriff’s deputy who had been patrolling nearby, arrived quickly and helped Nabors determine no one was home.
Firefighters with Rural Fire District No. 2 arrived a short time later, said Chief Jim Preston. He said firefighters with Rural Fire District No. 6 also assisted, and a medic unit out of Salina stood by.
“We got a pretty good knock-down on it,” he said.
The blaze was contained to the basement, where it started, he said. The fire appears to have started in wiring in the wall near the breaker box.
Nabors said firefighters told her she caught the blaze just in time to prevent it from destroying the house. She said she noticed the smoke at between 10:15 and 10:30 a.m.
