Fire destroys century old home

The home of Evelyn Anshutz, NW 190th Street, was destroyed in a fire that broke out just after 9:30 p.m., Tuesday.

The house in the northwest part of the county was fully involved engulfed by the time firefighters from arrived at the rural farmstead north of Seward.

Evelyn, who was home when the fire started, left the house and called 911 from another location.

The site was the Anshutz family’s original homestead according to Evelyn’s son Brian. He stated it started out a simple dugout with the house being built circa 1887.

Flames were contained to just the house even though strong winds fanned the flames and blew embers north into a windbreak of Cedar trees and other outbuildings.

Firefighters from Stafford, Barton and Pawnee counties responded some were on scene until approximately 3 a.m. Wednesday.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
