The Wabaunsee Township Fire Department (District 8) sponsored an open house to kick off National Fire Prevention Week on Saturday morning, October 5, at their station on Elm Street in the Wabaunsee town site. The firemen pulled their trucks out and had coffee and donuts in the station. Also available were coloring books, stickers, bandanas and foam ‘cozy’ cups with fire prevention themes. Smoke/carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers were available for purchase at a nominal cost. A number of community members stopped by to check out the equipment and to socialize with the refreshments. The open house fittingly ended with a call for the station to respond to a residence for a smoke detector going off in the attic. No fire was found, but the call provides a fitting reminder for everyone to replace batteries and check smoke detectors throughout the house and to check fire extinguishers to insure their readiness.
