The Mount Hope Fire Department responded to a hay bale fire just east of Mount Hope on Monday, July 22.
Fire Chief Jon Smith said no cause had been determined as of yet, but a call came in at 5:23 a.m. that about 120 hay and straw bales had ignited just north of 25232 W 109th St. North.
The Mount Hope firefighters worked to try to contain the fire by getting the bales that hadn’t caught fire out of the way of the flames using heavy equipment.
Sedgwick County firefighters also came out to the scene for a little while.
According to Smith, the fire was a total loss.
The bright spot for the firefighters was the kindness of some community members who brought donuts and people from the Mount Hope Nursing Home, who brought the crew coffee and lunch while they were working.
