Fire truck, a dozen cars shown in Morganville

Among the dozen old cars that showed up for Morganville’s car show Saturday included a 1954 Ford Fire truck still used by the Morganville Fire Department.

Volunteer fireman Gary Hall said while the old pump truck has a lot of miles on it, “it works fine.” The truck is used mainly within Morganville city limits for calls around town, he said.

Like the bigger fire trucks, the 1954 pump truck works by hooking up to a fire hydrant that boosts the water flow to fight fires. Without this booster pump, firefighters would be limited to whatever flow comes out of the hydrant, which usually isn’t much — about like the water that comes out of your faucet.

With the pump truck, firefighters can build up pressure and adjust it according to the pressure they need, depending how big the fire is and how far away they need to be. The truck is capable of shooting water from property across the street, Hall said.

To keep the truck in good operating condition, volunteer firefighters perform routine maintenance, “exercise it” by taking it out every now and then, and routinely check the hoses for major leaks, Hall said.

Other vehicles at the car show included several Ford Model A’s from late 1928, a ‘52 Chevy DeLuxe, a 1975 Chevy Laguna,  a Studebaker truck, and a couple of newer convertibles. Participants said they knew more would have come to the show had it been judged.
