Midland National Bank teamed up with Newton Fire/EMS Friday morning to promote fire safety, while rewarding customers of the bank.

Bank personnel cooked hotdogs for customers, on an outdoor grill. Firefighters gave tours of their trailer, in which they simulated a tornado, complete with power going out, window shades rising and the noise of tornadic winds, sounding as if they were outside.

For children coming through, firefighters had lessons on preventing kitchen fires. There were also phones from which one child could practice calling 911 and another could act as the dispatcher, taking information and giving instructions.

The activities, while promoting Midland National Bank, also coincided with National Fire Prevention Month.

For each new account opened, the bank donated $5 to the fire/EMS department. Each person opening a new account was given a smoke detector. A drawing was given for customers to win a free Kindle Fire and two fire extinguishers.

The bank had advertised the morning’s event through the Kansan, mailings and Facebook, but there were not as many customers as the bank had hoped for due to cold, rainy weather.
