Fort Riley battles blaze Sunday for more than nine hours

Firefighters on Sunday spent more than nine hours battling a natural vegetation fire in training areas on Fort Riley, according to a news release from the military base.

Fort Riley firefighters attempted to douse the flames, which burned from about noon to 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Steve Elstrom, chief of external information for the Fort Riley public affairs office, said in the release. The consistently high winds required mutual assistance from Geary and Riley county fire departments as well as the Kansas Forestry Service.

Training on the military base cased from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Further, the use of all pyrotechnics throughout the training and maneuver areas was banned from noon Sunday to early Monday.

No injuries or damage to structures were reported.
